#HRM20 – Cheers to a career in PR!
I always wanted to work in PR, even from when I was young. I remember people asking me at GCSE age what career I wanted and it was my instant response, even though, admittedly at the time, I didn’t really know what ‘PR’ was.
During my Communication Studies course at Sheffield Hallam University, I got the chance to fully understand what a career in PR involves and it only made me even more determined to work in this area.
Not long after graduating, I managed to secure a work experience role at HRM and loved every second. When a full-time account executive role came up, I jumped at the chance to apply and was lucky enough to get the job – and I’ve not looked back since.
Fast forward nine years and here I am, still working at South Yorkshire’s top PR agency. As the company celebrates its 20th anniversary, it’s hard to believe I’ve been here for nearly half of that time!
So much has changed over the years (including my hair, which has seen more colours than I care to mention!), but it’s been fantastic to be part of an agency that’s kept up with the ever-evolving industry. PR is such a varied role and it makes every day different, keeping you on your toes.
There’s definitely been some perks to the job along the way too. I’ve been lucky to meet and interview some famous faces, including Jessica Ennis-Hill, boxer Anthony Joshua, TV and radio presenters Colin Murray, Nick Grimshaw and Greg James, singers Example, Katie Melua and Tony Christie – and not forgetting the legendary Chuckle Brothers!
Despite having a career break in the middle to bring my now four-year-old daughter in to the world, when I came back from a year off I felt as though I’d never been away.
I can honestly also say that I feel lucky to work with such a great bunch of colleagues and we get on as friends first and foremost. We work very hard but, as a team, we also believe in having a laugh which makes the working day a lot more fun.
So, as I approach another gap in my career with baby number two due in January, here’s to seeing out HRM’s 20th year out with the continued success that it has always had. Cheers to that!
